Chang’s Unison series isolates the same word handwritten by numerous visitors to her installations. Concepts such as god and everything are highlighted as Chang contemplates her own agnosticism and the fundamentally human desire for meaning. The series is informed by traditional Chinese reproductions of venerated texts, from ink rubbings of philosophical inscriptions to calligraphic tracings of scholars’ poems. Implementing ink transfer techniques, Chang burnishes the image using hardware tools such as palm sanders, scrubbers, and brooms, excavating sediments of paper to evoke varying degrees of transparency.
