The Unison Series

Chang’s Unison series isolates the same word handwritten by numerous visitors to her installations. Concepts such as god and everything are highlighted as Chang contemplates her agnostic upbringing and evolving relationship with spirituality, as well as the fundamental human desire for meaning. The series is informed by traditional Chinese reproductions of venerated texts, from ink rubbings of philosophical inscriptions to calligraphic tracings of scholars’ poems. Implementing ink transfer techniques, Chang applies masking and ink or burnishes the image using hardware tools, excavating sediments of paper to evoke varying degrees of transparency.
