The Static Series

The Chinese chop or seal has been used for thousands of years and is still used as an official form of signature. Chang's Static series is informed by the enduring use of seals and the calligraphic discipline of replicating venerated texts as an act of mastery. She creates stamps of select handwritten responses from visitors to her installations and repeatedly imprints them as a focusing agent over long durations: I am still here while living in New York City during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic; I'm hungry while contemplating the fundamentals for physical survival and the more complex psychological drive towards personal fulfillment that consumes much of society today.
