Part of Chang’s Unison series, which isolates the same word written by numerous visitors to her installations, one hundred personal expressions of the word God interlock to form a circular mass. Chang hand-cut and burnished each response, excavating sediments of paper and ink to evoke varying degrees of transparency. Sometimes clear, other times clouded, the shared sentiment reflects her relationship with agnosticism and evolving definition of God. Chang’s approach is informed by traditional Chinese reproductions of venerated texts, from ink rubbings of philosophical inscriptions to calligraphic tracings of scholars’ poems. Through a process of deconstruction and reconstruction, the work serves as a collective portrait of the human desire for transcendence.
