New York City is surrounded by enigmatic islands, including Governors Island which is less than half a mile from the southern tip of Manhattan. The site of the Wright Brothers’ first flight over U.S. waters and once the largest coast guard base in the world, the island has a rich history unknown to many New Yorkers. To bring local history to the streets, Chang stenciled twenty landmark events in the history of Governors Island along a path on Governors Island. As visitors walk along the path, they can gain appreciation of the area’s rich history while enjoying a leisurely stroll. Part of the Figment public art exhibition.
2008, New York, NY. Temporary spray chalk, concrete path. 300′ long.
