Ginormous Rubber Duck

Big fun at the waterfront

This project is a 2006 proposal inspired by my love for lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the area in between. With over one thousand acres of property being developed along both sides of the East River shoreline, New York City is making huge grounds in revitalizing its waterfront. To celebrate these exciting developments, The Ginormous Rubber Duck draws attention to this area and becomes a symbolic reminder of childhood fun and relaxation. People can ride the giant rubber duck from shore to shore or marvel at its big, yellow, fun self from afar. And just as the rubber duck once made bath time more enticing, The Ginormous Rubber Duck encourages all to come closer and test the notoriously sketchy waters of the East River. It’s Claes Oldenburg + childhood nostalgia + a water feature!
