The Brooklyn Bridge is one of NYC’s top ten tourist attractions and over a million people walk or bike across the bridge each year. But when you reach the Brooklyn side the walkway unexplainably divides into two unmarked paths with lots of signs – for the cars. To help pedestrians find the many surrounding attractions and feel a warm welcome fitting for the borough with the mostest, I conducted a survey, spoke to over 20 local organizations, and analyzed the area with Kevin Lynch’s Image of the City in mind. I proposed a DIY stenciled navigation and presented the wayfinding project at the American Planning Association’s national conference in 2006.
